Inspiration
Sustainability has become a growing concern, but many consumers struggle to identify truly eco-friendly products due to greenwashing and inconsistent sustainability labels. We wanted to create a tool that helps people make informed purchasing decisions, encouraging transparent, ethical, and sustainable consumption.
What it does
GreenLens is a mobile app and browser extension that provides real-time sustainability insights on products. Users can:
- Scan barcodes or search products online to get a Sustainability Score (0-100)
- See detailed lifecycle analysis, verified certifications, and brand reputation
- Get alerts for misleading claims (e.g., vague "eco-friendly" labels with no proof)
- Find better alternatives that align with sustainability goals
How we built it(idea)
- Frontend: React Native (mobile), React.js (browser extension)
- Backend: Node.js + Express, connected to sustainability databases
- Data Sources: Public eco-label databases, OpenFoodFacts, company ESG reports
- AI & NLP: To detect misleading claims and greenwashing in product descriptions
- Hosting & Deployment: Vercel (frontend), Heroku (backend)
