Inspiration 🌟

U.S. construction generates 600 million tons of annual debris, yet "friction"—uncertainty about recyclability and facility locations—drives an approximate 40% contamination rate in Georgia and Tennessee. Most people want to recycle but lack the knowledge of what is accepted or where to go. GreenLens AI was built to try to help solve this problem by leading way to encourage community involvement and AI data collection.

What it does 💡

GreenLens AI is a dual-platform ecosystem for community leaders and contributors.

Mobile App: Uses Gemini 2.5 Flash to identify debris, estimate weights via visual cues, and route users to verified recycling centers.

Web Dashboard: Provides city leaders with real-time ESG analytics, tracking carbon offsets, diversion trends, and interactive scan heatmaps.

How I built it 🔧

Frontend: Built with Next.js for the dashboard and Expo (React Native) for cross-platform mobile access.

Backend & AI: A FastAPI server orchestrates Gemini 2.5 Flash for vision tasks and a corrections feedback loop for model refinement.

Infrastructure: Convex handles real-time database syncing.

Challenges I ran into 🚧

I developed a TON of features. It was challenging to demo every single feature. I also ran into many issues with working APIs to utilize Gemini and fine-tune it with a kaggle dataset of images focused on recyclables and organics.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of 🏆

I quickly developed two feature-rich applications that were well connected to each other. I had never used Convex and Gemini API in a project before. This was an exciting opportunity to learn about both of them and combine them into a transformative use-case solution.

What I learned 📚

In the quest of developing a community-focus sustainability solution, I learned that I should be a lot more selective with the features to develop. Its important to truly focus on those key features that serve the main purpose of the project.

What's next for GreenLens AI 🚀

Cutting down on unneeded features. Improving the AI scans through feedback and further training. Reaching out for collaboration with organizations willing to contribute to the cause of sustainability and community!
