Inspiration

I wanted to tackle one of the biggest challenges in sustainability today: trust. Too often, eco-friendly initiatives lack transparency, making it hard for individuals, schools, and communities to see their impact or hold themselves accountable. Inspired by the hackathon theme, I asked: What if blockchain could make every green action visible, verifiable, and rewarding?

What it does

GreenLedger is a blockchain-powered platform that:

Tracks community sustainability actions, such as tree planting, recycling, or renewable energy use.

Verifies contributions through photos or QR evidence, stored transparently on-chain.

Rewards users with EcoCredits, a community token that gamifies sustainable living.

Provides real-time dashboards so schools, neighborhoods, or cities can measure their carbon savings and compete in friendly eco-challenges.

How we built it

Frontend: React with TailwindCSS for a clean, accessible UI.

Blockchain: Algorand smart contracts for energy-efficient, transparent logging.

Database: Firebase/Supabase to store off-chain metadata.

Smart Contracts: ERC-20 style EcoCredit token using OpenZeppelin templates.

Optional AI layer: Google Vision API to auto-verify photos of eco-actions.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing blockchain transparency with ease of use for non-technical community members.

Ensuring the blockchain itself remained sustainable by choosing a low-energy chain.

Creating a rewards system that felt motivating without being exploitative.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Designing a gamified system that makes carbon tracking fun and community-driven.

Building a functional MVP in a short timeframe.

Keeping the tech stack accessible, so schools and local councils could actually use it immediately.

What we learned

Blockchain can be applied for social good beyond finance.

UI/UX is crucial for adoption of sustainability tools.

Transparency builds trust and empowers grassroots climate action.

What's next for GreenLedger – Transparent Carbon Action Tracker

Pilot GreenLedger in schools to encourage eco-friendly habits.

Expand EcoCredits into a marketplace, allowing tokens to be redeemed for local rewards.

Collaborate with city councils and NGOs for larger-scale adoption.
