InspirationThe use of single-use plastics in healthcare was adopted to avoid cross-contamination in healthcare services and research. However, during the time the amount of waste generated by single-use plastics became huge and with COVID-19 pandemic situation the need of using sterilized and protection materials increased for healthcare providers and for the rest of the population too.

In spite of plastics being cheap, easily processed and could be easily sterilized, the processes used for disposable plastic are not sustainable and cause many environmental problems releasing toxins to marine environments, for example. So, if we think that at least 25% of the waste generated by a hospital comes from plastic and how many hospitals we have around the world, it is urgent to think about a solution for this problem that could be sustainable and avoid the contamination of the different ecosystems. Our project has the main goal to contribute to raise awareness in the population and healthcare services for the amount of plastic that we are using and present sustainable alternatives that could be used instead for reducing their carbon footprint..

As we started brainstorming different ideas, sustainability and carbon footprint turned out to be our main concerns as a team. So we voted to the most major consumer of single-use plastics which is in the Medical Industry. As a UX designer, I started sketching and wireframing and could in the end design our Carbon footprint tracker app, GreenifyMe specifically for the medical waste and sector to raise more awareness and hopefully can promote eco-friendly products and suppliers.
