Submitted To Google Play Store
recently just submitted to google play store - so it might not have been approved yet! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michaelyoon.greenify - If it redirects you to a not found page it means that it hasn't been approved just yet :)
Inspiration
I was inspired by other apps that gamified ( to add an incentive/gaming aspect to their app ) to-do lists, such as adding a points or leaderboard. So I applied this to an eco-friendly app where it now gives you points and gives you incentives to keep you interested, as many people associate eco-friendly with a duty and not a joy. I hope to make people understand both their negative impact to our world and the power they have to change it.
What it does
It enlightens people on the "true" cost of the product on the environment, for example it tells you how much co2 it emits to transport it from the origin to the destination, simply by scanning a barcode. This takes in factors such as distance and weight of product. Since a number such as 30kg doesn't represent a lot, It has added visual representation such as how long would a car need to run to emit that much co2. I really emphasise on visual representation as there is a whole screen which shows you locations where you import products from and a chart showing your average co2 emissions over a period. Finally I added a fun twist to it, which moves being eco-friendly away from a chore and closer to a game. I made it possible to gain points by completing quests and with those points you can buy trees, these trees can then be planted in a 3d model of a plot of land which overtime turned into a vibrant and populated ecosystem, which both serves as a milestone and a tangible way to see your impact to society.
How we built it
I built it using a JavaScript framework called react-native, and used some libraries such as three.js and expo. I also used some UPC datasets to get product information.
Challenges we ran into
Adding 3D models was definitely one of the hardest challenges as integrating a 3d renderer into my app was difficult especially as it is not well supported by my framework, as well as that I had to learn blender in a short period of time to model the plot of land. Furthermore I find UI/UX especially complicating as finding a good design which was consistent and aesthetically pleasing takes a lot of time and knowledge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of making my app design clean and intuitive, following a two toned colour UI, which simplified the design a lot. Furthermore I am proud of rendering 3d objects inside an app and hope to do more apps based on 3d models, in the future. However the main part that I am proud of is my time management and although it isn't a technical accomplishment, it is something that I personally think I struggle with. As with only a week to do my project I managed to implement all of my features that I had planned in time, and some more!
What we learned
Using inspiration is key for design. Simply looking at other peoples app and understanding how they make it aesthetically pleasing, allowed me to understand what makes a good app and what doesn't, Also I managed to pick up some modelling skills in blender along the way and knowledge about how barcodes work.
What's next for Greenify
I hope to expand this prototype into a fully fledged app with more statistics and integrating even more databases for more information about the project and hopefully in the future it can be published to the google play store for the world to enjoy.
Disclaimer: I sincerely apologise for misinterpreting the requirements regarding the "societal problem." I assumed it referred to any issue affecting society without fully understanding its specific context. Despite my error, I put several sleepless nights over the course of the week into this project. I acknowledge my oversight and take full responsibility for it. While it may not align perfectly with the given guidelines, I hope my dedication and commitment can be acknowledged :)
