Inspiration We were inspired by the frequent miscategorization of waste, leading to landfill overflows. Our goal is to help people correctly categorize their waste and promote recycling.
What it does GreenGuide uses a machine learning model to identify if an item is recyclable, compostable, or landfill waste, helping users make eco-friendly choices.
How we built it We trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) on a diverse dataset of waste images. This involved data collection, preprocessing, model training, and testing for accuracy.
Challenges we ran into Finding suitable datasets and dealing with file pathing errors were major challenges that required extensive debugging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully trained a model that accurately categorizes waste items and overcame several technical challenges.
What we learned We learned a lot about machine learning, especially training and testing models, and the importance of data preprocessing.
What's next for GreenGuide Next, we plan to develop a mobile app for users to scan and categorize waste items instantly. We'll also keep improving the model with more diverse data and user feedback.
