Inspiration

The inspiration for GreenFuture VR stems from the urgent need to address climate change. Seeing the devastating effects of deforestation, flooding, and water pollution, especially with the recent floods in Nigeria, we felt compelled to create a project that not only educates but also empowers people to take action. We wanted to use immersive virtual reality to raise awareness and foster a deep connection with the environmental challenges we face globally.

What it does

GreenFuture VR takes users through four distinct scenes: the Home scene, Deforestation, Flooding, and Water Pollution. In each scene, users are educated on the environmental crisis through impactful visuals, passionate narration, and interactive AI-powered quizzes. The AI, powered by Gemini, generates random true-or-false questions related to the scenes, allowing users to test their knowledge while learning about the consequences of human actions on the environment.

How we built it

We built GreenFuture VR using Unity and integrated VR functionalities tailored for the Quest 2 headset. The app’s interactive elements include detailed 3D environments and AI-driven quizzes, powered by Gemini. Each scene allows users to visually experience the effects of climate change, with AI helping to generate dynamic and relevant questions based on the theme of each scene.

Challenges we ran into

Building a fully immersive and interactive VR experience came with its challenges. Creating realistic and impactful 3D scenes to accurately portray deforestation, flooding, and water pollution required careful attention to detail. Integrating the Gemini AI for real-time quiz generation and ensuring smooth interactions across scenes also presented technical hurdles, particularly in balancing VR performance with AI functionality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a VR experience that not only educates but also engages users on such a crucial global issue. The integration of AI to generate quizzes based on the content of each scene is a major accomplishment, adding an extra layer of interactivity and personalization to the experience. Additionally, the app addresses real-world issues like the flooding crisis currently affecting parts of Nigeria, making it a timely and impactful tool for raising awareness.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned the importance of combining immersive technology like VR with AI to enhance the learning experience. We also gained valuable insights into creating realistic simulations of environmental crises, ensuring users understand the severity of the issues at hand. Furthermore, we learned that addressing real-world problems through interactive technology can inspire users to take action in their own lives.

What's next for GreenFuture VR

Our next steps for GreenFuture VR involve expanding the app’s scope to include more scenes focusing on other critical aspects of climate change, such as air pollution and waste management. We also aim to refine the AI integration, allowing for even more advanced, context-specific questions and interactions. Additionally, we plan to make GreenFuture VR accessible on multiple VR platforms and expand it into educational institutions to promote sustainability awareness on a larger scale.
