Inspiration

We noticed that people want to eat healthy and environmentally-friendly meals but often struggle to choose recipes that are low-carbon, seasonal, and locally available. GreenDiet Planner was inspired by the idea of combining nutrition, sustainability, and simplicity in everyday meal planning.

What it does

GreenDiet Planner helps users plan vegetarian or vegan meals with:

  1. Low-carbon footprint analysis for each recipe.
  2. Seasonal and local ingredient suggestions (India-focused). 3.Tracking of calories, protein, and CO₂ emissions. 4.Multi-day meal planning with allergy and diet restriction filters.
  3. Quick search for recipes by ingredients.

How we built it

Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, dynamic rendering of meal plans. Data: Recipe and ingredient database with CO₂, nutritional info, and seasonality. Logic: JavaScript functions for picking plans, filtering by diet/allergies, and calculating totals. Features: Search bar for recipes, multi-day plan generation, sustainability scoring, printable summaries.

Challenges we ran into

-Ensuring accurate CO₂ calculations for complex recipes. -Handling user allergies and dietary restrictions efficiently. -Representing seasonal ingredient data in a user-friendly way. -Making the UI responsive and intuitive for quick meal planning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

-Developed a complete meal planning tool that balances health and sustainability. -Created an easy-to-use search system for recipes by ingredients. -Multi-day planning with nutritional and environmental summaries. -Interactive sustainability score and comparison with common high-CO₂ meals.

What we learned

  1. How to structure a recipe database with nutritional and environmental data.
  2. Dynamic DOM manipulation for interactive meal planning tools.
  3. User-centered design for filtering, searching, and presenting meal data.
  4. The importance of clear UI/UX in tools that combine multiple data points.

What's next for GreenDiet Planner

-Expand the ingredient database to include more regional produce. -Add personalized recommendations based on user preferences and habits. -Implement a mobile-friendly version or React/React Native app. -Introduce recipe substitution suggestions for even lower CO₂ footprints.
