Raised in the bustling city of Houston, Bryce was deeply moved by the need to reduce his carbon footprint in a society heavily reliant on automobiles. His personal journey of embracing eco-friendly commuting methods not only transformed his lifestyle but also ignited a desire to encourage others to follow suit. GreenCommute is the manifestation of this vision, aiming to make sustainable commuting not just a choice but a rewarding experience.

What GreenCommute Offers

GreenCommute gamifies the concept of eco-conscious travel, empowering users to make environmentally responsible commuting choices. The platform simplifies the planning and tracking of weekly journeys, all while focusing on reducing carbon emissions. Users can select from various modes of transportation—be it cars, bikes, or public transit—and participate in a competitive points system. This system benchmarks their daily carbon emissions against global averages and ranks them on a dynamic leaderboard.

Our Technology Stack

We leveraged Streamlit to craft an intuitive user interface for our platform. For real-time commute data, we integrated the Google Maps Platform API, and to sync with users' schedules, we utilized the Google Calendar API. User authentication is securely managed through the Google Cloud Identity Platform. Our scoring algorithm, developed using SciPy, quantifies the environmental impact of each commute, comparing it to national standards. All user data is securely stored in Google Cloud Firestore, and data manipulation is streamlined using the Pandas library. The platform is hosted on Streamlit Community Cloud, and we've incorporated Plotly for compelling data visualizations.

Challenges Overcome

Our journey wasn't without hurdles; we encountered complexities in user authentication and API permissions. However, these challenges only strengthened our resolve and skill set.

We take immense pride in our platform's sleek frontend, a feat made more remarkable by our team's initial unfamiliarity with Streamlit. Additionally, the successful integration of Google APIs stands as a testament to our technical prowess.
