💡 Inspiration Small businesses are the backbone of the global economy, yet they face a massive "Sustainability Gap." While large corporations hire expensive consultants for carbon accounting, small shop owners are buried under utility bills they don't know how to interpret. We built GreenChain to democratize climate action, turning complex billing data into a clear roadmap for net-zero emissions.
🚀 What it does GreenChain is an AI-powered sustainability auditor that automates carbon accounting for SMEs. By simply uploading a photo or PDF of a utility bill, the platform:Extracts Data: Uses Multimodal AI to identify kWh usage, costs, and billing periods instantly.Calculates Impact: Converts raw energy data into $CO_2$ equivalent ($CO_2e$) metrics.Benchmarking: Compares the business's footprint against regional industry averages.Actionable Insights: Generates a "Green Action Plan" with specific energy-saving retrofits tailored to the user's data.
🛠️ How we built it We engineered a high-performance serverless stack to ensure the tool is fast, free to use, and scalable:
Frontend: Next.js 14 with Tailwind CSS and Shadcn/UI for a premium, accessible dashboard.
AI Engine: Gemini 1.5 Flash for high-speed OCR and intelligent data extraction.
Backend & Auth: Supabase (PostgreSQL) for secure data storage and user management.
Logic: Custom TypeScript algorithms for carbon footprint estimation and trend analysis.
🧠 Challenges we ran into The primary challenge was handling the extreme variability in global utility bill layouts. We overcame this by refining our system prompts to treat documents as spatial maps rather than just text. By asking Gemini to return strictly structured JSON, we moved from fragile text scraping to robust, production-ready data extraction.
.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud of creating a frictionless "one-click" audit experience. Successfully integrating Gemini 1.5 Flash to achieve near-perfect extraction accuracy across diverse bill formats allows us to provide professional-grade sustainability insights to users who have zero background in environmental science.
.
📈 What we learned We discovered that sustainability is often an efficiency problem in disguise. By visualizing energy waste through data, we learned that we aren't just helping the planet—we're helping local businesses lower their overhead and survive in a competitive economy.
🔮 What's next for GreenChain Our goal is to expand the "Impact Card" ecosystem, allowing businesses to verify their emissions data on-chain for even greater transparency. We also plan to integrate with local utility APIs to automate data fetching entirely, removing the need for even the simplest manual upload.
