Inspiration

Sustainability is top of mind for many people, yet making eco-friendly choices while shopping is still surprisingly hard. Product labels are often vague, sustainability data is scattered, and greenwashing is common. Even motivated shoppers end up choosing convenience because reliable information isn’t available at the moment of decision.

GreenCart was inspired by this exact gap — not a lack of intention, but a lack of accessible, trustworthy, real-time sustainability insights when it matters most.

What It Does

GreenCart is an AI-powered, mobile-first sustainability assistant that helps users make better shopping decisions with just one barcode scan.

After scanning a product, GreenCart instantly:

  • Generates a transparent Eco Score (0–100)
  • Explains why the product scored that way
  • Recommends greener alternatives available nearby or on the same shelf

The entire process takes under two seconds, making it practical for real-world shopping environments.

How We Built It

GreenCart uses AI to evaluate multiple sustainability factors in real time:

  • Packaging material (plastic, paper, glass, etc.)
  • Recyclability
  • Estimated carbon impact
  • Product lifespan

These factors are combined into an explainable, weighted Eco Score:

  • Packaging – 40%
  • Recyclability – 30%
  • Carbon Impact – 20%
  • Lifespan – 10%

The system is intentionally designed to be transparent rather than a black box, allowing users to understand and trust the results.

On top of scoring, GreenCart tracks environmental impact metrics such as plastic saved over time and improvement in eco scores, supported by gamification features like milestones and eco challenges.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing accuracy, speed, and explainability. Sustainability data can be complex, and simplifying it without losing meaning required careful weighting and iterative testing.

Another challenge was ensuring the experience stayed fast and intuitive — shoppers don’t want to pause their entire trip to analyze data. Designing for speed was critical.

What We Learned

We learned that sustainability tools don’t need to be overwhelming to be effective. By delivering clear insights in seconds, small decisions can scale into meaningful impact.

We also learned the importance of trust — transparency and explainability are just as important as the final score.

Impact

GreenCart turns sustainability from an intention into action. By influencing everyday shopping decisions, it helps reduce plastic use, lower carbon impact, and build long-term eco-conscious habits — one scan at a time.
