We will be undergoing planned maintenance on Oct 7th 6:00AM UTC / Oct 7th 2:00AM ET

Inspiration-- Recycling is something that has always been in the corner of our minds due to its importance and also the impact to the community. We noticed a lot of students drink canned and bottled beverages regularly, so this website was built so that we can properly dispose of those cans and help keep the campus clean

What it does-- The basic idea of the website is that its for UNB students as of now. They would log in to the website using their UNB email ID (xxx@unb.ca) which would take them to the dashboard. They could then go to a section where they would capture a photo of the object that they are throwing and based on that, points will be awarded to them appropriately. If a certain number of points have been accumulated, they could get a coupon of sorts or a sort of service on campus which would encourage the students to participate.

How we built it-- We built it using Freebuff by having it give a base and then proceeded to manually debug it. We used several resources like netlify to publish it, claude for designing, VS Code for debugging the program and so on.

Challenges we ran into-- We ran into several problems like being unable to differentiate between 2 cans that look similar due to not having access to a proper image recognition software. We have thought of solutions that are feasible but are out of scope for us as of now. We also ran into technological problems like making sure that the OTP was received, making sure the QR Code works. We also ran into problems related to taking photos of the can, which lead to AI errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of-- We really think that this website has a chance to be the change that people want to see. We're proud about how user-friendly the interface is. Besides that, the color scheme of the website, or how the animations work to make it an aesthetically pleasing experience is also something that we felt was done really well.

What we learned-- We learned how to use several tools online the way it was intended to be used. But we also never abused it by understanding what it did each step of the way, improving our skills in programming and coding in general. We also learned about how important recycling is, not just for the students who belong here but also the general public.

What's next for GreenBin-- We plan on expanding GreenBin in a way that not only UNB Students can access it. We want this to be an initiative not just in our college but all over so that our website can help in making a difference in the world.
