Inspiration

We are very passionate about climate change and aware about how harmful its effects can be. Climate change can harm us in various ways. Ranging from warmer climates to poverty, your role in picking up garbage and saving gas mileage can have a big impact.

What it does

We developed a game/website where you can compete with your friends (like every other game) to see who recycles the most bottles and saves the most pounds of carbon dioxide. This is a fun and easy way to motivate people to start playing their role in saving the earth.

How I built it

For the front end, we used HTML, JavaScript, Bootstrap and CSS (Styling). For the back-end, we used Python as well as computer vision AI for the detection of recyclable items. This process took about 4 days.

Challenges I ran into

Accomplishing the camera part was not easy. The resulting pictures were coming out squished and compressed. The AI detection was not detecting ALL the bottles or cans. For example, in a group of three cans and two bottles, it would only detect one bottle and two cans, thus not giving an accurate carbon score or the amount of pounds you saved.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Although we have not quite nailed the compression of the pictures, we are satisfied that we were even capable of figuring it out and implementing it in our website. We happy to work with AI and playing around with it in different perspectives to figure out which way works best for this website. Lastly, we are fortunate to be able to put out something like this in the world, as we hope that this becomes something that teens and adults enjoy and something we can implement in our daily lives. After all, we have to protect the earth we live in.

What we learned

We learned and acquired numerous skills throughout the making of this project. First, we learned how to implement camera features to our website, which obviously was not easy at first, but grateful to have been able to overcome it. Second, we played around with AI, experimented with Python, and have the most accurate results yet. Last but not least, we had so much fun styling the website and designing a logo just for it! Picking out theme colors, picking out a logo really added the dash of spice it needed.

What's next for GreenAI

-Implementation of this website at schools, colleges, and neighborhoods, to motivate more people to fight against climate change, and play their role to protect the earth. -Addition of more data so that the website detect the objects more accurately. -Having weekly competitions to spark more interest in climate change and sustainability -Develop a carbon calculator so people can calculate their score using other factors other than just recycling--gas, mileage, etc.
