Inspiration
Indonesia has a serious garbage problem. According to Plastic Bank Indonesia, every year, out of the 7.8 million tons of plastic waste, 4.9 million tons are not managed properly, with 83 percent finding their way into the ocean, threatening the marine ecosystem. All of this garbage problem will end up with mindsets. Wrong mindsets could create people that don't care about the environment. This inspire me to take a step in creating an educational game. I believe mindsets are built when people were still kids. If we educate kids to start caring about environment, the mindsets of the future generation will totally change, and this will make people stop throwing trash to anywhere they want. Not only that, this will make the Earth a better place.
What it does
This app is an educational game that can encourage people especially kids to start taking care of the environment, such as not throwing random garbage into random places. It has an entertaining and interesting storyline which follows a boy named Jose with an Alien. Children will be given tasks, and all of the tasks are about how to preserve the environment. This app can be a source of childhood education, or just for entertainment, since it also has interactive games in it.
How we built it
First, I think of a concept and I made the flowchart and storyboard. Then, I start designing. After I made the design, I start to code. Honestly, it depends. Some part of it, I made the logic first. Then, I added BGM and sound effects. Lastly, I exported it into apk.
Challenges we ran into
Sometimes, the games got a lot of errors. I think the tricky part is when you need to save the data about the last page you enter into the local storage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm really proud that I can join this hackathon and finish this app in 36 hours. I honestly was a little bit sceptical. But I finished it. So I'm really happy and proud of myself. I also got a lot of nice friends
What we learned
I learnt how to manage my time. I also learnt how to design fastly. It's a new experience for me.
What's next for Green Up
This educational game could be made into tons of series with different kind of topics. I will continue to develop more topics with fresh ideas for the games so Indonesian kids could have a proper educational game with great topics such as sustainability.
