Inspiration
The inspiration behind GreenTogether came from the need to motivate people to take part in sustainability efforts in their local communities. We wanted to create a platform that blends community engagement with eco-conscious action in a way that’s fun, interactive, and rewarding. Seeing how social and gamified experiences can drive behavior change, we aimed to design a tool that turns environmental responsibility into an enjoyable activity.
What it does
GreenTogether helps users find and participate in local environmental events such as park cleanups, recycling drives, and tree planting. Users can check in by scanning QR codes at event locations to track their participation. The app gamifies these actions with a point system and leaderboards, fostering a sense of community and friendly competition. Points earned can be redeemed for eco-friendly rewards, encouraging sustained participation.
How we designed it
We began with a brainstorming session to generate as many ideas as possible. From there, we sketched paper wireframes and combined the best concepts into a cohesive low-fidelity prototype. These prototypes were then developed into mid-fidelity and ultimately high-fidelity versions. Throughout the process, we focused on creating a seamless experience that allows users to easily discover events, participate, and track their progress.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest design challenges was creating an interface that balanced detailed event information with a clean, engaging layout. Ensuring the design was both visually appealing and intuitive took several iterations, particularly when integrating gamified elements like leaderboards and point tracking. We also faced difficulties in designing a user flow that made event discovery and check-ins feel effortless while maintaining clarity and accessibility.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a design that not only promotes sustainability but also makes it fun and engaging for users. The integration of gamification elements, like leaderboards and rewards, came together smoothly in the final design. We also successfully streamlined the user journey, from event discovery to participation, ensuring it felt natural and intuitive. Most importantly, we’ve built a platform that encourages positive environmental action and community involvement.
What we learned
Through this design process, we learned the importance of user-centered design and how critical it is to keep the user’s journey simple and intuitive. We also realized the power of gamification in motivating behavior change and how design can influence long-term engagement. Additionally, we learned how to iterate quickly and refine our ideas based on feedback, which helped us create a more polished and effective final design.
