Inspiration
We are inspired by Tycoon genre games. But we as a team noticed these types of games don't promote environmentally friendly alternatives. Thus our goal is to design a game to voice a greener lifestyle. We aimed to show players that if they rely on these alternatives, they can increase the quality of their environment by reducing their carbon footprint.
What it does
Players play the game by purchasing in-game blocks from the edit/buy menu. Generator blocks create energy over time and others are for decorations. These generator blocks give user coin when they play the harvest minigame. With corresponding weather conditions and the time they waited before harvesting the block, players gain bonus coins. The game repeats itself from then. Harvest, buy, wait.
How we built it
Used Snapchat API system and persistent storage quality to store the individual block data, so the players can continue to play the game later when they open the lens. Weather data and Time data have been used to give coin boost in minigames. Also, AR inputs such as rotation, tap, and microphone are used to design minigames. After we built the logic, we added the UI and 3D models from the blender to the studio.
Challenges we ran into
A persistent storage system has limited capacity. So we used a data block (a very long string) and compacted data to save storage on persistent storage. Also, the lens didn't have enough space for all the assets we wanted to use. So we compressed the assets as much as we can with Draco compressor and crush-e.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to design a working game for Snapchat was such an honor for us. And giving the message of a greener, safer world to educate players on how to save the planet from global warming and climate change is something we are proud of.
What we learned
Teamwork is a great way to create a living product since everyone puts their ideas on the table. We had to research corresponding energy numbers from sources to give players a realistic output. By doing so we learned even more about how to save the planet.
What's next for Untitled
For the next step, we wish to increase project size by adding more resources that players can use and play with. More coin types, resources that they need to collect, and more game assets. And more minigames! After that next step would be to apply an invite function to the game so that players can invite their friends to their village to hang around in XR space.
