Inspiration

Often due to convenience and its affordable pricing, processed foods have quickly become a lot of people’s main source of nutrition. Not only that, a rise in remote work and faster modes of transportation promote a sedentary lifestyle. While it can be easy to know what you are consuming when it comes to unprocessed foods, the rise of processed foods in supermarkets has made it harder to gauge what they contain. The countless components added to processed foods have made it harder for the consumer to gauge which products have the best nutritional value.

What it does

Our application allows the user to continue to consume those convenient foods while prioritizing health and sustainability. Through our filtering system, the best option in the market is offered to them according to their nutritional needs, promoting healthier choices. The application also allows for the user to sort the products according to their environmental impact. This allows them to not only make a more conscious choice for the sake of their individual health and benefit but also for the sake of our planet.

How we built it

We used React Native as a language to create our application as this Javascript library can be used to build interfaces for IOS, Android and web all at once. This involved designing the user interface, managing app functionality, and testing it across different platforms. Despite being new to React Native, we successfully learned and implemented features within the short hackathon timeframe.

Challenges we ran into

As first-time React Native developers, our biggest challenge was learning a completely new framework. Setting up the environment, ensuring the app worked on both Android and iOS, and fixing errors were all new experiences for us. With limited time during the hackathon, it was tough to learn and build quickly, but it was a rewarding experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges, we successfully built a fully functional application that met our initial goals in both functionality and design. We’re especially proud of creating a user-friendly filtering system and achieving a seamless interface that works on multiple platforms. It was incredibly satisfying to see our ideas materialize into a working application within such a short timeframe.

What we learned

This being the first hackathon for all of us, this was a new experience that allowed us to learn to use React Native to build an application that works on all platforms.
