Inspiration
We realized that businesses often receive detailed energy bills but rarely gain insights from them. Each invoice holds untapped data about electricity use and carbon impact. Green Sense was born from a simple idea, turn everyday bills into a roadmap for reducing CO₂ emissions.
What It Does
Green Sense lets companies upload their monthly energy bills (PDFs) and instantly transforms them into an interactive sustainability report. Using the Gemini Generative AI API, the platform: Extracts and analyzes key energy and cost metrics Generates easy-to-understand graphs and visual summaries Offers a chatbot powered by Gemini for personalized energy-saving advice Displays a gamified leaderboard comparing carbon footprints across organizations In seconds, businesses can see where their energy goes, and how to make smarter, greener choices.
How We Built It
We built Green Sense using a Node.js backend and Angular frontend, hosted on Google Cloud Platform. Gemini’s API powers both the document parsing and the AI insights engine, converting raw bill data into actionable sustainability intelligence.
Challenges We Faced
Accessing real-time utility data was tough, most companies don’t have open APIs for energy consumption. To solve this, we built an AI-based PDF uploader that extracts all relevant usage and cost details from scanned bills using Gemini’s multimodal capabilities.

What We Learned
We explored how Generative AI can bridge the gap between complex utility data and accessible climate action. Our biggest takeaway: AI isn’t just about automation, it can drive awareness, accountability, and real change.
What’s Next for Green Sense
Green Sense has the potential to grow into a full sustainability ecosystem. Here’s what’s coming next: Real-Time Data Integration: Connect with public energy APIs and IoT smart meters to provide live tracking of energy consumption and emissions. B2C Expansion: Bring Green Sense to households and individuals, empowering everyone to monitor and reduce their personal carbon footprint. Automated ESG Reports: Generate ready-to-use sustainability and compliance reports for corporate users. Local Green Marketplace: Recommend nearby solar installers, EV rebates, and energy-efficiency programs using Google Maps and local data APIs. Eco-Challenge Community: Launch a gamified community where users can take on public “Green Challenges” (e.g., “Save 50 lb of CO₂ in 30 days”). Carbon Offset Integration: Partner with tree-planting and carbon offset APIs to help users neutralize their footprint directly within the platform.
