Inspiration
Our friend's plant perished the other day. To make sure she does not die in vein, we created an app to prevent future seedlings from going unwatered like this. We must protect our plants and our planet! However, with so many things going on in our days, remembering when to water our plants can be difficult. So we created an app that reminds plant parents when to tend to their children while encouraging sustainable practices and community. After all, plants, no matter how small, are a simple and fun way to help make our earth more green!
What it does
Green Scene is a user-friendly, aesthetic app that utilizes Twilio to send text reminders regarding their plants' needs. We incorporated a calendar to help keep track of when each plant needs to be watered, as well as their birthdays and milestones! Green Scene has a built-in plant identifier using image recognition (to be coded) to add a new plant to the family, and information such as the day they were added/planted is uploaded. Additionally, customizable categories makes keeping track of the user's plants easier. One of our unique features is the Grapevine, which is a built-in platform where plant owners can post questions or stories and connect with other plant lovers by replying to threads. The Grapevine also features articles emphasizing easy-to-implement sustainable practices, such as composting at home, to encourage green habits and showing that sustainability is accessible to everyone!
How we built it
We used Figma to develop an interactive prototype of Green Scene, designing and hand-drawing nearly every image in the interface. By importing a Twilio package and customizing the code to fit our needs, we implemented the plant-watering reminders as text messages to the user's phone.
Challenges we ran into
We self-learned Twilio to use for this project and could not link its code with Figma, so we decided to use them separately.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
All four of our members learned Figma at a Pearl Hacks workshop and picked it up quickly, allowing us to create our aesthetic, engaging interface. We were proud of our innovative features, particularly the Grapevine and our cute hand-drawn images using Procreate.
What we learned
To design a great UI/UX, we learned how to effectively use Figma and Twilio. We gained experience in balancing function, aesthetics, and user engagement in designing an app and being flexible while sticking to our original goal.
What's next for Green Scene
We do not currently have the knowledge to implement the plant identification feature, which is important to help identify the plant. Also, with more botany information, we could also incorporate a way to assess how healthy the plant is based on an image (browning, wilting, soil dryness, etc).
