Inspiration We were inspired by the urgent need to reduce healthcare’s carbon footprint especially in operating rooms, where plastics, gases, and energy waste contribute heavily to emissions. We saw an opportunity to align clinical excellence with environmental responsibility. What We Learned Through research and engagement with clinicians, we learned that sustainability in hospitals must go hand-in-hand with cost savings and operational efficiency. Data transparency and real-time feedback are key to driving adoption. How We Built It We designed OR-SmartOptimize as a precision sustainability platform, integrating data analytics, real-time monitoring, and decision support tools. By combining cost metrics with environmental impact, we built a system that empowers both clinicians and administrators to act. Challenges We Faced One challenge was balancing the complexity of OR workflows with the simplicity clinicians need. Another was translating sustainability metrics into financial terms hospital administrators could trust. Finally, building a scalable model for diverse hospital systems required iteration and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
