Inspiration

The inspiration for Green Rivalry came from recognizing the urgent need to address climate change and the powerful role that collective action at the university level can play. We were motivated by the idea of turning environmental responsibility into a shared, engaging experience for students. The concept was to create a platform that not only raises awareness about sustainability but also builds a sense of community and friendly competition around the cause. This project was driven by the belief that small, consistent actions by individuals, especially within a university community, can lead to significant positive environmental impacts.

What it does

Green Rivalry is a sustainability initiative at the University of Virginia which focuses on reducing CO2 emissions across dormitories. Each dorm's emissions are meticulously tracked and updated on a dedicated website, which features a detailed, real-time leaderboard. This leaderboard not only displays current emission standings but also includes a comprehensive six-month history, allowing students to see changes and trends over time. At the end of each month, the dormitory with the lowest CO2 emissions is recognized and rewarded with prizes, providing a tangible incentive for students to adopt greener practices. This setup enables a continuous, engaging competition among students, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and awareness.

How we built it

We utilized HTML, CSS, Google Sheets, d3.js, and Chart.js.

What we learned

This project taught us a great deal about collaborative problem-solving and the importance of interdisciplinary approaches. We learned that combining environmental science with data analytics and user experience design can create powerful tools for change. The importance of clear communication in making scientific data accessible and actionable became evident. We also gained insights into the behavioral aspects of sustainability, understanding how data-driven incentives can influence environmental practices.

What's next for Green Rivalry

Looking ahead, we plan to expand Green Rivalry beyond UVA dorms to encompass other university campuses and potentially residential communities. We're exploring partnerships with environmental organizations and tech companies to enhance our data analytics capabilities and broaden our impact. Additionally, we aim to integrate more types of environmental data, like water usage and waste production, to provide a more comprehensive view of sustainability. Our ultimate goal is to establish Green Rivalry as a standard tool for environmental accountability and improvement in communities across the nation.
