Inspiration

We are facing a global crisis, climate change needs to be addressed, and it is the need of the hour for industries to become net zero. About 10% of UK's carbon emission and about 13% of world's carbon emission is due to agriculture related activities. Having a passion for climate and sustainability, we developed a means to help reduce carbon emissions for agriculture industries.

What it does

The application takes simple accessible data such as the amount of water used for irrigation to make recommendations to minimise the use of water where possible, saving energy and thus reducing the carbon footprint. The application also takes into consideration the carbon emissions produced through the release of nitrous oxide from agricultural soils and methane from manures to make a good estimation of the net carbon emissions.

The net carbon emissions are compared with the net oxygen produced which can be easily calculated by measuring the size of the plant. This comparison will form the basis to suggest options such as planting more plants or reducing water for irrigation to achieve the goal of net zero.

How we built it

• Determined the input variables. • Designed a flowchart to develop the application logic. • Verified the logic in a web IDE using JavaScript. • Upon satisfactory results, the logic was implemented in Foundry and TypeScript.

Challenges we ran into

• Familiarising with Foundry as it is a new tool for us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Pleased with how the GUI turned out. • Endured through the 24 hours of hackathon without sleeping and staying determined to make a working prototype for the application.

What we learned

• New graphical ways to implemented logic as supposed to traditional line by line coding. • New ways to interact with integrate and present data.

What's next for Green Mango

• Develop the application further to extrapolate the data to see how the carbon emission situatuion would be in 10-15 years. • Adding more input variables to make a much more informed decision.
