Inspiration
In today's world, the environmental impact of waste, particularly non-recyclable and non-compostable items, is a growing concern. Many individuals lack awareness and understanding of how different materials are processed and their subsequent effects on the environment. This knowledge gap contributes to poor waste management practices, increased pollution, and heightened environmental degradation. Consequently, there is a critical need for an educational tool that not only assists users in identifying recyclable and compostable items but also provides comprehensive information on the environmental impact of various materials. By empowering individuals with this knowledge, we can promote more supportable waste management practices, reduce pollution, and mitigate the adverse effects of waste on the environment.
What it does
We came up with the idea of “GreenLens”, a mobile application that serves as both an educational tool and a practical guide for individuals aiming to contribute positively to the environment through better waste management. Essentially, what the app does includes, Identifying Recyclable, Compostable, and reusable Items, giving the impact on society you get by properly disposing of these items, and based on how much impact you make you get certain in-app rewards like badges/medals of achievements. GreenLens represents a comprehensive approach to tackling environmental issues related to waste management, combining technology, education, and gamification to promote a more supportable future.
How we built it
We developed GreenLens using React Native, leveraging 11ElevenLabs for our transformer models and Cloudinary for media management. The core technology includes blip processors and sequence-to-sequence models, enhanced with attention mechanisms to transform text into speech. We fine-tuned LLM_s for heightened accuracy and optimized model inference speed. Additionally, the application integrates _OPEN AI's capabilities, runs on a Flask backend, and employs cross-origin resource sharing for API interactions.
Challenges we ran into
During the development of GreenLens, we encountered several challenges, particularly in the text-to-speech feature. This functionality was crucial for making the app accessible and interactive, allowing users to receive spoken information about the environmental impact of items.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
There are several accomplishments that stand as testament to your team's hard work, innovation, and dedication to this time constrained hackathon, including Integration of Advanced AI Technologies, training and fine tuning ML models. These accomplishments not only reflect the our technical achievements but also our contribution to promoting accessibility through innovative technology.
What we learned
We gained invaluable insights into the complexities of integrating cutting-edge AI technologies within a user-friendly application, the importance of optimizing for performance and accessibility to ensure a wide range of user appeal, and the challenges of conveying complex environmental information in an engaging and understandable manner.
What's next for Green Lens
Moving forward, GreenLens aims to broaden its impact by enhancing its database for greater item recognition, introducing multi-language support, and integrating augmented reality (AR) for an immersive educational experience. Plans also include fostering a community through social features, pursuing partnerships for accurate recycling information, all while exploring opportunities for policy advocacy and educational initiatives to further it mission of maintaining environmental awareness and action.
