Inspiration
Between 2000 and 2014, clothing production doubled with the average consumer buying 60% more pieces of garment compared to 15 years ago. Yet, each clothing item is now kept half as long. On average, we only wear our clothes 7 times on average before discarding them.
What it does
Our project aims to address the issue of clothing waste by enabling consumers to track their clothing purchases and the clothes they own, so that people can recognize how much they are spending on clothing, cut down on consumption, encourage reuse and recycle, and help save the planet.
How we built it
Our project consists of a mobile app and a browser extension. We used Miro, a collaborative whiteboard platform, to create the user interface of our mobile app and a browser extension.
Challenges we ran into
Time constraint and our limited experience with app development. We didn't get into actual coding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
1) Our idea is scalable. Users can access it in any city or state as long as they have access to a smartphone and/or laptop. 2) The app has a clean design and it's easy to navigate. The user has the choice between importing their emails or manually enter their clothes. 3) Even if the app cannot reduce clothing waste drastically, it can raise people's awareness of this issue, which we tend to overlook when our focus is how affordable the clothes are.
What we learned
For all three of us, it's our first experience with UI design. We enjoyed every step of the design process, including drawing the flow chart, thinking from the user's perspective, adjusting what to include and not include in our app, and giving the interface a clean, refreshing look.
What's next for Green Hanger, Your Mobile Closet
1) We want to increase our app's transferability to include an option for the user to associate their Green Hanger account with their Amazon account, so that it can track the usage of not only clothing but other household items to reduce consumption and waste. 2) We hope to include a chatbot or artificial intelligence like Siri into our app, to make it more interactive and easier for the user to input data. For example, instead of manually logging 30 pieces of clothing (which is a lot of work), they can talk to the app and have the app categorize and sort for them.
