Inspiration

With Halloween approaching, we wanted to make something fun to counter the poor environmental impacts of the holiday.

What it does

Green Halloween is an app that encourages sustainable candy buying and disposal. In the “Candy” section, consumers are able to search for their favorite candies and see a sustainability rating. Meanwhile, the “Disposal” section lists out actions that can be taken to dispose of Halloween candy properly.

How we built it

Green Halloween is an app with the technical side encoded into Xcode, allowing for transfer to a mobile interface. It is designed in SwiftUI, with several pages that can be accessed with different buttons, allowing users to navigate through the app and reach a conclusion to their search. The design aspects of the app are hand-drawn, from the backgrounds to the buttons.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble from the start deciding which platform we should ultimately begin with. We tried designing in Figma, only for us to realize the designs could not convert over to a coded app. Ultimately, our developers learned an entirely new language to create the app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are definitely proud of our incorporation of hand-drawn designs within the app, and the way we created an app by learning a new coding language and platform overnight.

What we learned

Aside from learning SwiftUI and using Xcode to build an app for the first time, we were learning all over the place. Nearly every part of the process was new to us, forcing us to use every available resource to learn how to bring our solution to life.

What's next for Green Halloween

Given the chance to move forward, Green Halloween would add a few different features. This would include a costume exchange base, where families can recycle and reuse their old costumes for others. We also hope to develop a more complex system to accurately calculate sustainability scores for more Halloween products.
