Did you know that food waste makes According to CBC, a whooping 35.5 million tonnes of food is lost or wasted -- that's equivalent to 58% of all food produced in Canada! For America, $218 billion worth of food wasted each year. Because of this, our team was inspired to design an innovative solution to solve this problem!
What it does
Our website allows the user to either manually add food items in (eg. from a recent shopping run) or upload an image of an receipt that will automatically add food entries in. We also have alerts which notify you if a food is about to expire or has expired. To encourage sustainability and decrease food waste, we also recommend recipes based on the food item that is closest to expiring! Some other additional functionalities include login as well as allowing the user to remove a food item once it is consumed or expired!
How we built it
Our web app is powered on the backend by the Python Django Framework and REST API and on the front end with ReactJS.
Challenges we ran into
For most of us, we were completely new to Python and React. We spent a lot of time learning about the frameworks we used as well as integrating front end to back end. Also, another major challenge was being able to scan a receipt for food items to add to the user's fridge!
Accomplishments that We're proud of
Pretty much our entire team was quite inexperienced with Python and React. However, we were up for the challenge to not only tackle a totally new backend/frontend language but also integrate the two together. We are super proud of our final product and hope you will join us on our journey to tackle food waste! 😊🌱
