While watching the open ceremonies, top producers of CO2 were mentioned, upon hearing that traffic is 10% of the world's carbon emissions, we knew a sustainable option should exist that incentives the user to be eco-friendly and reduce traffic, therefore CO2 and slows climate change.
What it does
Green Crowd uses crowd-sourced data to avoid traffic and reduce CO2 emissions that cause climate change. The in-app currency, Carbon Coin, incentives users to build more eco-friendly habits such as carpooling, leaving at a low traffic time, submitting reports of traffic to help others avoid it, or share eco-friendly businesses. Due to public perception and government-regulated carbon offsets, companies are searching for ways to offset their carbon. With Green Crowd, companies can sell sustainable products that are bought in Carbon Coins and offset carbon via reducing traffic and building eco-friendly habits. Green Crowd’s mission is to reduce CO2 emissions, creating a win-win for the environment, businesses, and consumers alike.
How we built it
We built the app in SwiftUI and used various frameworks such as MapKit and Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
We initially ran into issues with providing a solid incentive to the user to adopt eco-friendly habits, however with some mentoring, critical thinking, and reflection we were able to create Carbon Coin to incentivize users to be more eco-friendly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of overcoming the initial lack of clear idea to incentivize the user and developing a functional app that helps slow climate change.
What we learned
We learned that incentive is everything, and that you must have a compelling story to engage users. We also learned that there is a significant interest in the app, according to our Instagram poll asking if people would use an app that pays you to reduce CO2 emissions, 39 said they would while 4 said they would not.
What's next for Green Crowd
After this hackathon, we will pursue business and nonprofit partnerships to provide sustainable products to incentivize users to be more eco-friendly. We will further test the app with TestFlight, eventually, launching it on the App Store and make a significant impact!
