Inspiration

Recently the sustainable fair took place on campus and we heard that food waste takes up 1/4 of the landfill. This is alarming because a lot of resources go into growing them, and it contributes to the ongoing global warming issue. We wanted to create an everyday solution that everyone can partake in.

What it does

Once you enter the ingredients into the search bar, you recieve a recipe which can be cooked effciently with the lmited resources that you provide.

How we built it

We had a team of three people working on the front end, and 2 on the back end. The front end worked with react.js and CSS styling, and the back end worked with python and flask. While the front end was working on the skeleton and aesthetics of the site, the backend worked on scraping the data from the site and parsing it into a usable form for the front end.

Challenges we ran into

Our main difficulty was trying to figure out how to connect our back end with our front end. Not only were we a little unfarmilar with the libraries we were specializing in, but we had absolutely no idea how each language really interacted with eachother. In the future, we should have at least an idea of how the languages that we use work in general - we cant do our own things and just expect them to work when pieced together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of sticking at it and not giving up, even after going through so much difficulty. Luckily we had awesome mentors to help us as while we struggling. We also learned a lot during this project.

What we learned

Through the course of this hackathon and making progress towards our project, we learned that coding is something that is very fun, but it is also very difficult. It is fun because of the sense of comradery and sense of accomplishment we get from seeing our code working. It is difficult because of our unfamiliarity with certain coding tools (e.g. React, Flask, and how to communicate between the front end and back end). Overall though, the most important thing we learned was how amazing coding can be. Coding is a very broad concept that allows us to solve a variety of problems, and we plan to pursue more coding in the future
