Great Outdoors: Ice Fishing VR — Project Story
Inspiration
I was inspired to create an easy-to-use fishing game after hearing many adults and children express that some Horizon Worlds games feel too difficult or overwhelming. I wanted to design a world that welcomes newcomers, offers a simple learning curve, and provides a relaxing environment. This world gives players a gentle introduction to VR gameplay while still offering fun competition through leaderboards.
What It Does
The experience places players in a calm winter setting where they can fish at their own pace. Whether someone wants to unwind or compete for the top score, the world supports both styles of play. In a sense, the experience is designed to feel accessible—almost like lowering the “difficulty curve” from a steep slope to a smooth function allowing players to ease in comfortably.
How We Built It
We built this project using a combination of the Horizon desktop editor, Blender, Photopea, and AI tools including Meta AI and ChatGPT. We also relied heavily on knowledge gained from mentor classes and our prior world-building experience.
Challenges
We faced several hurdles, including broken build tools, glitches, and unexpected technical setbacks. Despite these obstacles, we kept pushing forward.
Accomplishments
One of our proudest achievements is simply getting this world to a competition-ready state. There were moments we weren’t sure we could finish, but we persevered.
What We Learned
Mentor classes proved extremely valuable, and we gained even more confidence in our development workflow.
What’s Next
We have many exciting plans for future updates, especially as new tools become available. The future of Great Outdoors: Ice Fishing VR feels full of possibility.
