Inspiration
The travel industry is a TRILLION dollar industry; not only does it come with a big price tag--it also has a huge impact on the environment, specifically carbon emissions. Thus, we decided to build Gravel: a website that creates a "green" itinerary for your vacation!
What it does
We aggregate data on green hotels, and provide them in a non-intimidating way to the user
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
on the backend, it was very difficult to aggregate data on green hotels. There is not a database for hotels, and most available API's require you to be a partner, which usually involves a substantial payment or a data exchange. There are obvious challenges to using a spider to crawl and scrap the web, namely speed.
