Inspiration

  • Philadelphia is one of the poorest big cities with a 26% poverty rate. Along with poverty comes food insecurity, which is at 22% in Philadelphia. This means almost 1 in 5 Philadelphians are starving. In the US, almost 72 billion pounds of food is wasted every day which means that there is no scarcity of food available in the country. The issue is that people don’t know where food is available and the resources at shelters aren’t vast enough for them to reach out to everyone.

What it does

  • It helps connect local Philadelphia restaurants with surplus food to shelters in the area to provide food for those in need.

How we built it

  • Full-stack Node.js with MERN stack

Challenges we ran into

  • Setting up Redux

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A fully functional authentication back-end and front-end with hash passwords, passport tokens.

What we learned

  • DO NOT use Redux when you only have 24 hours to build an MVP in a hackathon.

What's next for Gratis

  • PWAs (service workers)
  • Scale up to outside of Philly
