Inspiration

NGO’s are more common and funded than ever, yet inequality persists (and is worse than ever). We must do away with the bureaucracy of organizations and put the power in the hands of the people. Inspired by the recent deletion of the social media platform Parler, which allowed people to spread hate and conspire an insurrection on the capitol, our team wanted to create our own social media app to allow people to connect and make positive changes together. Rather than spreading hate and creating a divide, we wanted to encourage teamwork and giving back to our local communities.

What it does

Grassroots is a location based platform that allows you to explore and connect with those in your community (and find new ones). This purpose of this app was to create a place for actionable change for those who are passionate about social activism. With Grassroots, you can host events, protests, and directly help those in need within your community. You can add friends, create and join local groups and organizations, as well as find out what service and grassroots events are happening near you.

How we built it

We used the online tool Figma to visualize and prototype our app. As most of us don't have much coding experience, we found Figma to be the easiest and most efficient way for us to develop our idea. Using Figma, we were able to create a consistent UI across all aspects of our app, and optimize its performance for iPhone. Additionally, we were able to collaborate and make edits to our document simultaneously, and give each other comprehensive feedback on each aspect of our designs. We also used Figma we to add interactive features to our pre-designed app, and link together the various pages. Additionally, we were able to add hyperlinks to the various organizations mentioned within our app, which allows users to explore event and organization pages within our app as well as view official pages and sites outside of our app.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges that our team ran into were finding an easy-to-use platform to prototype our app. We weren't sure of where to start and found ourselves feeling almost hopeless about our abilities to demonstrate and develop our vision. After several hours of research, however, we were able to find a platform suitable for us and our abilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of being able to find a way to visualize our app idea. We're proud of our teamwork and the strong dynamics we established, considering this is our first project together.

What we learned

We learned about how to approach the app development process from the user's perspective and learned about how to make certain features on an app more intuitive. We also learned about the many layers and pages that must go into an app to ensure it has enough functionality.

What's next for grassroots

We want to actually put our prototype into motion by developing the back end of the app.
