Inspiration

Both my partner and I have a passion for video games. I am also a little burned out, so I just wanted to make something fun. We walked around to try and figure out what project our initial idea should be, we were undecided on Fetch.ai and SpacetimeDB. However, when we realized that SpacetimeDB, could enable blazingly fast multiplayer without introducing all of the complexities that come with multithreading so we decided to lean into that and make a game!

What it does

Grapple Slash n Fight is meant to be a party game where a virtually unlimited number of people can join and play at once. It follows a king of the hill style game play loop, where users can press right mouse button to grapple to either a player or a piece of terrain, and right mouse button to attack and try to knock the other players off.

As players are knocked off, the arena shrinks dynamically, and as players join, the arena grows to accommodate them. Additionally, as players group to one side, the arena begins to tilt based on the number of players on a particular side.

How we built it

We used Godot as the game engine of choice as it provided us with the lowest barrier to entry due to its simplistic design. We decided to use SpacetimeDB as the database. All relevant player information is read through and written to our SpacetimeDB database. This allows us to host and process a virtually unlimited number of players in an instance.

Challenges we ran into

We ran out of time to work on getting a mobile version working, but we would like to have users be able to scan a QR code, and join an instance.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're happy with what we built. This will have been our first time taking an idea from scratch and building a game from it. We feel like we executed well on the idea, and brought a couple of drawings on a piece of paper to life.

What we learned

SpacetimeDB is an incredibly performant option for a synchronized database. Also, that Godot has a MCP server, and that we should have used that far earlier.

What's next for Grapple Slash n Fight

Our vision for Grapple Slash n Fight, is one where users can simply scan a QR code on their phone, and load into a lobby. We intended to bring this functionality, but we ran out of time to implement phone controls on the web.
