Graphite
Using the Zettlekasten Method to help engineering students build connections with their thoughts, one note at a time.
Inspiration - Atomic Note Taking
The Zettlekasten Method is founded on the principle of one note for one concept. More often that not, students learn a variety of related concepts at once, which causes them to focus too much on the forest, and not enough on the trees.
The Zettlekasten Principle is simple:
- Every topic get's it's own unique note with it's own unique ID
- Users can (and should) link their thinking together by referencing the other topic's unique ID's.
- Users should add references to other things that they think are related to what they are learning
We have taken this age old german concept and pinoeered a modern note-taking tool for the digital age.
Enter graphite!

The User Interface
Graphite is a fully featured markdown and $\LaTeX$ enabled editor. It combines the flexibility of simple headings, tables, and images, with the power to embed complex diagrams, mathematical equations, and even snippets of executable code!
The left side panel allows for users to write unbostructed markdown commands. (Fun fact, this current DevPost article was actually written in Graphite!) The right side, provides a clean rendering of your text, complete with code formatting and diagrams. But the real power is in our power features.
The Piece de Resistance - Linking Notes
Whenever typing a note, users can just type @ and instantly search through all of their notes to insert hyperlinks to anything they find relevant. These hyperlinks automatically populate on the knowledge graph, which you are free to explore and move around to your conent.
A Helping Hand from the Best Data Source in the World - Wikipedia

In addition to building an amazing note taking tool, we also deployed an AI model with Microsoft Azure that can extract keywords from your text. After extracting keywords, we query them to our offline cache of Wikipedia to find relevant articles to supliment your note taking process. This can help you quickly find relevant articles about your learning, or even put you on the path of something new and enhance your learning even more.
Live Cloud Sync for Collaboration and Universal Access
Learning is not a solitary endeavor. Just like we learn best by connecting our knowledge, we also learn best by connecting with our peers! Every note has a unique URL that can be shared. If you can watch our demo, we'll show you how your changes are automatically rendered on other computers in real time for collaborative note-taking!
What we learned
Front-end development is hard. However, Svelte takes the king in building highly performant apps with hackathon deadlines. Svelte FTW!
Accomplishments We're Proud Of
Our app is beautiful! And we're very proud of building something that we'll use when class starts tomorrow. We already have plans of adding in touch screen support, OpenAI chatbot integrations, and flashcard support. Don't be suprised if you find your peers using our app in the classrooom soon!
