Researchers, students, NGOs, startups, and innovation teams often have strong project ideas but struggle to turn them into structured, funder-ready proposals for various reasons: lack of time, insufficient experience, lack of understanding how to turn an idea into a structured grant proposal, and even laziness. Preparing a grant or project proposal usually requires many separate tasks: defining the problem, writing objectives, preparing a methodology, building a budget, identifying risks, aligning with SDGs, adding evidence, and formatting the final document.

GrantAI solves this by turning early research or raw project ideas into structured proposal drafts through a guided workflow. It helps users move faster from:

idea → structured proposal → evidence-supported draft → funder-ready output

The app is designed as a Work & Productivity tool for scientific and innovation proposal development.

🛠️ How I used MeDo

I built GrantAI through an iterative MeDo development process, using precise step-by-step prompts rather than one large prompt.

The workflow included:

  • Defining the app concept and requirements
  • Creating the guided proposal form
  • Generating proposal sections, budget, risks, and M&E indicators
  • Adding saved drafts and demo project functionality
  • Improving UI/UX for landing page, sidebar, modals, dark/light mode, and mobile responsiveness
  • Adding AI proposal polishing and funder-style adaptation
  • Testing outputs and using surgical prompts to fix specific issues without breaking stable functionality

I structured the conversations with MeDo very carefully: each prompt had a strict scope, success criteria, and warnings not to change unrelated features. This helped preserve stability while gradually improving the app.

The most impressive part MeDo helped create was the complete proposal-building workflow:

  1. The user enters project information.
  2. GrantAI generates a structured proposal.
  3. The app creates a budget breakdown, risk matrix, and monitoring & evaluation indicators.
  4. The Review Assistant evaluates proposal readiness.
  5. Evidence Brief and Research Support strengthen the proposal rationale.
  6. AI Polish improves the proposal language.
  7. Funding Scheme Polish adapts the proposal to styles such as:

  8. The final proposal can be exported or saved.

GrantAI uses MeDo's built-in plugins and research-support functionality to extend the app beyond static templates.

Specifically, Large Language Model, Google Scholar and Web Search plugins were used to empower the application.

Key integrations/features include:

  • AI polishing to improve clarity, grammar, and proposal quality
  • Funding Scheme Polish to adapt proposals to selected funder styles
  • Evidence Brief generation to support the rationale with context points, evidence claims, and research keywords
  • Research Support to help users find literature relevant to their proposal
  • Supabase integration for account-based draft saving and project persistence

Supabase allows registered users to save, reopen, and manage their proposal drafts, while guest users can still explore the app through the demo project.
