Inspiration
One of our teammate’s grandfather had Alzheimer’s and often he would go missing and his family members had a tough time tracking him and bring him back. We could track if they go somewhere locally but this is nearly impossible if they walk off to distant places. So we wanted to find a way to keep our teammate's grandfather safe by building something which can be helpful for all the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Market Need
According to a study, one out of every 20 people above the age of 65 are suffering from Alzheimer's. Other than the strong personal motivation the current market needs a product through which it can solve this. But not many are there in the current market and the ones present want the patient to wear some dedicated device like a neck ring or something. So this product has the potential to replace all this and revolutionize the remote health care domain thus making this an important product in terms of the current market.
How this Works
The elder person will have a smartwatch on his end and the caretaker will have a mobile application on his end.The caretaker will receive all important updates and notifications from the smartwatch to his phone. The elder can log onto the application from his end. (For the demo we just used an apple watch simulator and not an actual apple watch)
Architecture
What it does
The proposed solution requires the user to have a smart watch that will be connected to the care-taker’s application. The watch continuously sends data - HeartRate, Step Count, ECG, location to the caretaker’s application. The user can have any kind of smartwatch starting from Apple Watch to Fitbit and the proposed application will be able to extract data from any of the Apple watch. The application mainly focuses on the parameters of heart rate and location. If any abnormal reading is observed the caretaker will be notified with a push notification on his mobile phone. The application also gives emphasis on the user’s current location as most of the people suffering from Alzheimer’s frequently get lost in the crowd. In this way, the application answers the most important two issues of Heart risk and poor navigation skills by making use of the heart rate and location parameters offered by Smartwatch and iCloud
How we built it
The application is mainly using Swift-UI and Firebase. The front-end is built using Swift and the backend is entirely Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the data from the watch and transfer it to firebase was a bit hard
Connecting the front-end to the back-end was a bit hard as we ran it a lot of errors
Integrating all the components into one single product was a bit challenging
Elderly and Smart-Watches
- Roughly one-in-five U.S. adults (21%) say they regularly wear a smartwatch or wearable fitness tracker, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted June 3-17, 2019.
- And out of these 21% about 8% of the people fall in the age category of above 60
- If this application is deployed and marketed properly thi can have a huge impact on the people
Life-Saving Features
- HEART ATTACK DETECTION - USING HEART RATE AND ECG
- LOCATION TRACKING - PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING LOST(MOST OF ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS FACE THIS PROBLEM
- FALL DETECTION - RECOGNIZE FALL AND REPORT TO THE CARETAKER (STILL IMPLEMENTING)
How is this different?
Most of the system which is built for people Suffering from Amnesia mainly focus on things like games to increase their memory or support groups and forums where people talk about the problems. There is no system which uses the Smartwatch data to track their status. The information we get from Smartwatches are data which can be used to track the person’s health status like Heart rate, step count etc.We try to offer a all in one solution for an Alzheimer’s patient which makes our project different from the rest.
Best of all the patient will not feel like he’s wearing something to monitor him.Apple watch is just a smartwatch so that factor would have a huge psychological effect.
What we learned
Swift, Swift-UI, Firebase, Health-Kit
What's next for GRANHEALTH
1.Implementing Fall detection
2.Making the App Cross-Platform
3.Adding Voice assistant skills like Alexa and Google assistant skill
