TRACK 1: Culture

Q1: From our 5 interviews, 20 survey responses, and secondary research on Reddit, we discovered that interviewees were worried about their family recipes being lost to time. Additionally, they expressed a need to archive and share family recipes, a desire to learn about different cultures through food, and a drive to find authentic cultural recipes. Thus, our problem statement is: “How might we help people find authentic family recipes from other cultures, record and archive their own family recipes, and create communities to facilitate learning about other cultures in an organized and intuitive manner?“

Q2: Our solution is to create an app that allows users to find a variety of cultural family recipes written by everyday people, thus ensuring their authenticity. Addressing the problem of family recipes being lost to time, our app is meant to act as a digital archive. It also features a scanning function to upload handwritten recipe cards (which many interviewees were using and complained about not being durable). To allow users to learn about the history behind cultural cuisines, our app features cultural showcases where users can read about the featured cuisine’s cultural background and explore relevant recipes. Additionally, our app has a Community page where users can read, post, and reply to comments so that they can learn about cultural foods. Overall, our research revealed that family recipes are closely connected to comfort, familiarity, and warmth, which are feelings that we incorporated into the design of our app.
