Grandline - Gridlock

“Making real-world impactful projects that can ultimately help us save resources and, in turn, save the planet.”

What it does:
Our project creates an automated workflow that detects whether multiple construction projects are overlapping in real time. We extract project lists from documents provided to us, mapping their coordinates, calculating straight line distances, and flagging geographic overlaps within a 25 mile radius. Our system then pairs this with timeline analysis to highlight cross utility opportunities, helping utilities share resources and save on infrastructure costs.

How we built it:
Our project was built mainly using Python, using the Overpass API, and Anthropics API for AI parsing of documents. We also created a streamlit dashboard with provides a lightweight UI for visualizing overlap events and triggering workflows.

Challenges we ran into:
Coders by day, data analysts by night. We had to learn how to collect large amounts of data and turn it into useful information that could be applied in a practical and sensible way for users.

Accomplishments we’re proud of:
We’re not only proud of creating a working project, but also of the learning experience that came with it. We were able to work with technologies we've never used before and collaborate, brainstorm, and execute with each other to finish with a functional tool, given the short amount of time and the fast paced environment.

What we learned:
During the duration of us working on our project, we were able to learn and tackle the process of translating real world issues from project specifications, breaking down complex problems into core components, and turning that into a finished project. From having to work with real world data friction from having to grab relevant information from the documents, collecting and cleaning them to then connect to our projects infrastructure. Also learning from the technologies provided.

What’s next for Grandline - Gridlock?
In terms of what's next for Grandline - Gridlock, we would like to eventually be able to deploy a full web application which would feature real time planning and costs for neighboring utilities.
