Inspiration

Every dog owner knows the look: your dog stares out the window, walks down the street, and meticulously sniffs and marks every tree, lamp post, and fire hydrant. To humans, it’s just a bathroom walk; to dogs, it’s a high-stakes territorial border patrol. I thought: what if we made that invisible dog world visible? What if your daily walk became a playful, real-world turf war between neighborhood dogs?

What it does

Grand Turf Doggo transforms routine dog walks into an interactive real-world territory game while tracking dog fitness:

  • Paint the Map: As you walk your dog, your route actively claims neighborhoods for you and your dog's faction.
  • Neighborhood Rivalries: Compete against local neighborhood dogs—whether you're a syndicate Yorkie or a heavyweight Pitbull, consistent walking is how you claim the block.
  • Walk stats: Tracks distance, active walking time, estimated dog steps and calories burned, and full walk history.
  • Photo Dog Checks: Snap a photo of your dog on the walk.

How we built it

This is my most complex product built yet and at the same time first public software product, built using AI-assisted pair programming and deployed directly to Google Play during the RevenueCat Shipaton. The Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: React Native & Expo with real-time GPS geolocation and background tracking.
  • Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL & PostGIS) managing spatial territory calculations, live leaderboards, and user data, Gemini vision API for moderation and real dog verification
  • Monetization & In-App Purchases: RevenueCat. As a non-traditional developer, RevenueCat allowed me to seamlessly integrate a monthly/annual VIP Pro tier (unlocking advanced canine fitness analytics, extra patrol radius, and breed cosmetics) as well as a limited-edition 100-Cap Founder Lifetime Pass. RevenueCat webhooks sync purchase entitlements directly with Supabase, giving our users instant access.

Challenges we ran into

  • Fair-Play GPS vs. Cheating: Distinguishing a genuine dog walk from someone driving by in a car. Implemented pedestrian walking speed caps and trajectory smoothing to keep the turf wars fair for real dog walkers.
  • Territory Mathematics: Finding the sweet spot between instant territory theft versus percentage-based cell influence, ensuring walks don't require rigid closed loops to be fun.
  • Battery & Background Geolocation: Keeping accurate GPS tracking active while the phone is locked in the dog owner’s pocket without draining the battery.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • True Habit Motivation: Developing the game made me take noticeably longer, healthier daily walks with my own dog.
  • Organic Word of Mouth: The most rewarding moment was during closed testing, when early testers began asking if they could invite their friends and neighbors to join and battle for their street.
  • Shipping to Production: Taking an ambitious real-time location-based game from an idea to an approved Google Play production build in weeks.

What we learned

Building an app from scratch demystified how much architecture goes into seamless user experiences—from database concurrency to mobile lifecycle states. Most importantly, I learned that with modern AI tools and developer platforms like RevenueCat, a solo creator without an engineering background can now design, build, monetize, and ship a real native app.

What's next for Grand Turf Doggo

  • Pet-Friendly POIs & Shelter Support: Highlighting pet-friendly cafes, dog parks, and verified local shelters directly on the game map.
  • Sponsored Community Competitions: Partnering with pet supply brands for weekly distance competitions with real physical rewards.
  • iOS App Store Release: Bringing the turf war to Apple devices so every dog in the neighborhood can participate!
