Inspiration

In recent years, rising discrimination and violence against Asian communities in the U.S. has been disheartening. This sense of division in a world drifting toward de-globalization inspired me to create a work that speaks back through culture.

What it does

By combining GTA, one of the world’s most popular games, with rap, the dominant musical genre in the U.S., and by adopting the perspective of African American voices from the grassroots, the project calls for equality, respect, and solidarity — a vision of shared humanity that I hope can resonate across borders.

How we built it

The project was conceived by a human creator and brought to life through AI tools, combining human imagination with technological execution.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was maintaining consistency in the characters — ensuring they had coherent identities and believable circumstances that would allow the audience to truly step into their world. We needed to craft situations that felt authentic and emotionally engaging, so that viewers could empathize with their struggles.

On the technical side, we faced issues such as synchronizing mouth movements for the performance of rap vocals, and finding ways to generate visuals that carried stronger dramatic and cinematic impact. Balancing these creative and technical demands pushed us to refine both our storytelling and production processes, ultimately making the project stronger.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In the end, we achieved strong consistency in the protagonist, while also enriching his surroundings and daily life. We made innovative attempts in portraying his backstory, experimenting with different visual styles. This approach added depth and variety, making the overall narrative more engaging and visually compelling.

What we learned

We learned how to craft a compelling narrative around a single protagonist, making his story authentic and emotionally engaging. Experimenting with different visual styles showed us how imagery can enrich storytelling and bring more depth to his backstory. Working with AI tools also taught us to address technical challenges such as lip-syncing rap performances and creating visuals with stronger impact. Above all, we realized that creative limitations often inspire innovation, and that art and technology can complement each other to convey universal human emotions.

What's next for Grand Treasury Thief

Looking ahead, we plan to further refine the artistic and narrative aspects of Grand Treasury Thief. We hope to expand the project with more polished visuals, deeper character development, and enhanced use of AI tools, aiming to create a version that is both more cinematic and more impactful. We also look forward to bringing the work to a wider audience through screenings and collaborations.
