About the Project
Inspiration
Light is one of the most powerful environmental signals affecting the human body. It regulates our circadian rhythm, which controls sleep cycles, energy levels, mood, and cognitive performance. However, while humans can perceive brightness, we cannot naturally perceive the biological impact of light on our internal clock.
Our inspiration came from the idea that there are many environmental signals influencing our health that remain invisible to us. Just as fitness trackers helped people understand steps, heart rate, and sleep, we wondered:
What if people could sense how light affects their biology?
This project explores the idea of a new form of sensory awareness—circadian light perception—that helps individuals understand how their environment influences their wellbeing.
What We Built
We designed LumenSense, a speculative wellness platform that allows users to track and interpret biologically relevant light exposure throughout the day.
The system consists of three main components:
A wearable circadian light sensor
This sensor measures the wavelength, intensity, and timing of light exposure.A mobile application interface
The app collects and analyzes light exposure data.A visualization and insight system
The platform translates complex biological signals into clear insights about circadian health.
Together, these components allow users to understand how their environment influences their sleep, energy levels, and daily rhythms.
How It Works
The wearable sensor continuously measures environmental light exposure. The system captures key parameters such as:
The application then converts this information into easy-to-understand feedback for users.
What We Learned
This project deepened our understanding of:
- Circadian biology and how light influences human physiology
- Human-centered design for emerging technologies
- The challenges of translating complex sensor data into intuitive visual interfaces We also explored how speculative design can help imagine future technologies that expand human perception.
Challenges We Faced
One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that communicates invisible biological signals in a way that feels intuitive and meaningful to users.
Another challenge was balancing scientific accuracy with usability. Circadian biology involves complex interactions between light wavelength, timing, and intensity, so we had to simplify these concepts into visualizations that are easy to understand.
Finally, we had to think carefully about ethical considerations, such as data privacy and avoiding information overload for users.
Looking Forward
LumenSense explores a future where technology extends human perception and helps people better understand the environmental factors shaping their health.
By transforming invisible signals into actionable insights, the platform empowers individuals to make small behavioral changes that can significantly improve sleep, productivity, and overall wellbeing.
Ultimately, our goal is to move toward a world where people don't just see light—they understand how it affects their biology.
