Inspiration
Large classrooms, overflowing assignments, and stacks of essays make grading one of the most time-consuming parts of teaching.
Professors spend hours giving feedback, and students often wait days for results.
GrAIde was inspired by a simple question:
What if grading could be instant, fair, and personalized - without burning out educators?
We set out to build an AI-powered assistant that helps professors handle large classes efficiently, giving students faster, smarter feedback while professors reclaim their time.
What it does
GrAIde is an AI-powered grading and assessment platform designed for professors.
It automatically evaluates short answers, essays, multiple-choice, and true/false questions, giving immediate, constructive feedback.
Professors can:
- Upload or import entire question banks from Excel.
- Create interactive quizzes and assignments in minutes.
- Let GPT-4 handle grading for written and conceptual questions.
- View real-time analytics and student progress dashboards.
In short, GrAIde acts as a digital TA that never gets tired and grades consistently.
How we built it
We built GrAIde on a modern, scalable web architecture optimized for education and AI workflows.
Core technologies:
Next.js 15(App Router) for server-side rendering and routing.TypeScript+Zodfor type safety and schema validation.Drizzle ORMwithNeon Postgresfor database modeling.Clerkfor authentication and role-based access (Professor, Student, Admin).OpenAI GPT-4 APIfor automated grading and written feedback.TailwindCSS+ShadCNfor responsive, elegant UI design.
Build phases:
- Foundation: Set up Next.js, Postgres, Clerk, and schema modeling.
- Core: Implemented AI-based grading, quiz creation, and Excel import.
- Polish: Added analytics, dashboards, and optimized database queries.
Example setup:
npx create-next-app@latest graide
npm install drizzle-orm neon clerk openai
npm run dev
Challenges we ran into
| Challenge | Solution |
|---|---|
| AI grading consistency | Designed detailed GPT-4 prompts with rubrics, keyword matching, and contextual scoring. |
| Handling large classrooms | Indexed queries and optimized schema relationships for high-volume performance. |
| Excel import accuracy | Built a parser to clean, validate, and structure imported data automatically. |
| Balancing automation with fairness | Allowed professors to review, override, and customize AI-generated grades. |
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional AI grader that handles subjective and objective questions.
- Enabled easy Excel-based question imports with one click.
- Created a production-ready, FERPA-compliant architecture.
- Developed intuitive dashboards for professors to manage grading and performance analytics.
- Reduced grading time for large classes from hours to minutes.
What we learned
We learned that effective AI-assisted grading requires both engineering precision and educational empathy.
Building consistent AI graders taught us the importance of structured prompts, well-defined rubrics, and continuous testing.
We also learned to scale relational data efficiently, manage role-based authentication securely, and design interfaces that educators actually enjoy using.
What's next for GrAIde
- Integrate with learning management systems like Canvas and Moodle.
- Add a rubric builder so professors can define custom grading criteria.
- Introduce AI-powered question generation directly from uploaded course materials.
- Support offline grading and caching for low-connectivity environments.
- Expand analytics with insights into student learning trends and question difficulty.
Our next goal is simple: make AI-assisted grading accessible to every educator, in every classroom.
