Inspiration

As a high school junior preparing for college, I kept hearing the same advice from older students: “I wish I had known how to manage my money sooner.”

That stuck with me.

With rising tuition, living costs, and student loan debt, financial literacy is no longer optional for college students — it's a lifeline. Yet, most students aren’t taught how to build a budget, track spending, or even understand how loans work. I wanted to change that. GradWise Finance was born out of a desire to make personal finance approachable, interactive, and student-friendly.

What it does

GradWise Finance is a comprehensive web platform designed to help college students take control of their finances through a suite of 17 interactive calculators. Each tool is built to address a specific aspect of college financial life, making it easier for students to plan, save, and spend wisely.

How I built it

GradWise Finance is a fully frontend web app built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Each of the 17 calculators is designed as a modular section on a single page, featuring real-time calculations, interactive inputs, and 7+ financial tips per tool.

The site includes: A dark mode toggle Responsive, student-friendly UI All logic handled with vanilla JavaScript — no backend or Java used It’s fast, lightweight, and fully focused on helping students manage money right in their browser.

Challenges I ran into

Balancing depth with simplicity – I had to ensure the calculators were powerful but not overwhelming for students with limited financial knowledge. Keeping the UI clean – With 17 tools on a single-page layout, organizing content clearly was key. Realism vs Scope – Some ideas, like full scholarship databases or user data analytics, had to be postponed due to time and complexity limits. Interactivity – Making every calculator dynamic, responsive, and error-proof required lots of testing.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Built 17 fully functional calculators from scratch in one cohesive platform Created a clean, responsive UI that's both user-friendly and educational Integrated real-time financial tips tailored to college students Designed and implemented a full dark mode experience Focused on social and financial impact through accessible tools

What I learned

How to break down complex financial topics into simple tools and tips Improved my skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and UI/UX design Learned to prioritize clarity, usability, and accessibility Gained a deeper understanding of college-related financial challenges
