Inspiration
Many of our team members are first-gen students and there were many problems that we both saw within our community and are experiencing ourselves, one of those problems is that there are vast amounts of information but never a clear way to go to find what you are looking for. GradMap offers that way, with different degrees, courses, and advice that you can search for all within mere seconds.
What it does
The GradMap website helps low-income first-gen students plan out their future degrees and careers while recognizing their financial situation. We have 6 categories followed by a list of degrees and explanations of what the degrees are. We then list some classes good for common degrees so people know what to take to help their future. Then we provide some financial tips along with a form for them to fill out so they can see the tips best for them.
How we built it
We researched different degrees and common categories people tend to get jobs. We listed degrees following the categories. We then researched classes to help teach people about the degrees to help them get the jobs that they want. Then we looked up financial tips to help them save and better spend money so they can afford to take these classes and get a degree, so they can get the job they want without many financial struggles. We referenced other websites to help better these people learn from. We also had some previous experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which we also used to our advantage.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were scheduling times when our whole team could meet, splitting the work evenly, figuring out the Syntax and layout of Next.js, formatting our tsx in the ways we wanted to, conducting and figuring out the best sources for our research
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to submit something for this Hackathon. Beyond that, we are incredibly proud of how it turned out, and while it does need improvements, the main core functionality is there as well as much of the formatting. We are also proud of the amount of research that we put into this project, and that we demonstrated that research through the website.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Next.js and how it is used. We also learned how to better coordinate our team and communicate with one another. We all gained crucial skills such as time management, patience, and teamwork, and we generally learned more about how publishing and making a website works.
What's next for GradMap
We want to try updating GradMap to look more organized, as well as adding further research into different degrees and courses. We also intend on adding new features to better the UI and overall comfortability of the site.
