Inspiration
Our inspiration was looking at classes when making schedules and not knowing what class or professors were particularly hard. We hope this helps the USC community of Columbia to get more transparent data for classes.
What it does
Allows you to visualize the grade distributions of professors and classes. We want this to be very usable for non-tech savvy students. The user experience is designed to be appealing to all.
How I built it
Python that parses HTML and CSV then generates data by keying into these files and creating visualizations of the data. Everyone on the team was introduced to some new technology on the project.
Challenges I ran into
File formats, non-ASCII characters, non-breaking spaces, dependencies, modifying CSV in Python. Ablity to support complex queries.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Finite state machine for HTML parsing! Keeping dependencies low. We put a lot of thought into our design and this initial build will help us a lot with design going forward.
What I learned
Finite state implementation in Python, making Python send stuff to HTML on the web.
What's next for GradeForge
Implement SQLLite, fix character problems for non-ASCII. MUCH more advanced querying from the web interface.
