Inspiration

The slow turnaround of assignment grading often hinders student learning and increases workloads for instructors. We envisioned a solution that leverages AI to accelerate grading, offer high-quality feedback, and free educators to focus on engaging, interactive teaching.

What it does

GradeAssist automatically generates custom grading rubrics from exam prompts or assignment instructions and quickly grades student submissions based on those rubrics. The platform delivers fast, actionable feedback to students while minimizing manual grading tasks for professors and TAs.

How we built it

We combined a powerful natural language processing model with a user-friendly web interface. Our system scans uploaded exam materials, formulates a grading rubric, and then evaluates student submissions. The backend’s AI engine learns from existing rubrics and user inputs to refine its assessment and feedback generation.

Challenges we ran into

  • Ensuring our AI model could handle the variety of responses and grading schemes across different subjects.
  • Striking the right balance between automated scoring and instructor oversight to maintain fairness.
  • Managing the large data sets needed for meaningful analytics and insights.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a robust prototype that accurately grades diverse question types.
  • Successfully implementing a streamlined feedback loop, reducing grading time from weeks to days—or even hours.
  • Creating an accessible interface that keeps educators in control while enhancing student learning outcomes.

What we learned

  • Effective AI-assisted grading requires thorough collaboration between educators and developers.
  • Designing clear rubrics and consistent data structures is crucial for accurate and transparent scoring.
  • Prompt, high-quality feedback significantly boosts student engagement and performance.

What’s next for GradeAssist

We plan to expand our platform with advanced analytics for detecting learning gaps, customizable feedback templates, and deeper integrations with learning management systems. Our ultimate goal is to redefine the grading process worldwide, freeing educators to devote their time and expertise where it truly counts: inspiring their students.
