Inspiration

The original basis of our ideas began with wanting to create a game that took place in Gracie's, the primary dining hall at RIT, which is iconic for being the worst dining experience on campus. Knowing we had only around 7 hours to create our game, we took inspiration from games with simpler game mechanics such as Overcooked. In regards to art style, we took inspiration from YouTuber @Xx_skull_mug_xX and the style of their "simulator" videos.

How we built it

The main structure of the game was primarily built and programmed in Unity using Visual Studio Code. In terms of the assets that were implemented in the game a mix of Blender, Gemini, FL-Studio, and Photoshop was used. Using Gemini/Google Studio AI we created a python script that could be imported into Blender to create the primary 3D models for the game such as the waffle station, batter dispenser, etc. All music used in the game was created by a team member in FL-Studio and the main menu, win, and death screens were all created in Photoshop.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the first two hours of the game jam it became clear that original idea of creating the entire Gracie's layout was out of scope for the time we had. On top of that, it became apparent that some parts of the development such as the creation of the necessary 3D models would take more time than we had. To address this we cut down the original idea, deciding to focus on implementing one station at Gracie's we believed would allow for the most player interaction and gameplay. For the 3D models, after doing some more research about Blender, as we were unfamiliar with the software, we found we were able to use Gemini/Google Studio AI to create python script that could be imported into Blender to then create the 3D models we needed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Liam was able to create 6 songs in FL-Studio, all within the time limit of the game jam, on top of using photoshop to create the title, win, and death screens for the game. Ananya, because of her original unfamiliarity with Blender, was able to do more research and find an alternate solution to create 3D models through Blender's Scripting mode and using Gemini to create the needed code. Amalia learned how to use Unity for the first time and despite her inexperience was able to take the 3D models from Blender and implement them into Unity. Additionally she was able to create the 3D models for the NPC models. Ayden was able to write the code for the structure of the game, create all of the interactions between models, player, and screens, and working through debugs in Unity.

What's next for Gracie's Simulator

The continued development of Gracie's Simulator will include the creation and implementation of several other stations within Gracie's such as the beverages, BBQ, pizza, ice cream, and dishwasher stations. The final version of the game would include the player having access to all parts of Gracie's with more gameplay mechanics such as an inventory system, upgrades, etc.
