What is GrabNGo?
GrabNGo is an accessible, affordable, and sustainable way to help individuals obtain low-cost food, for stores to make extra profits, and in turn, heal the Earth. Restaurants and other food producers can sell their excess food on GrabNGo for a cheap price, and users will purchase the items they prefer and pick them up at the store.
What Inspired Us?
After learning that approximately $473 billion worth of food is wasted annually in the US alone, we wanted to find a way to significantly reduce this number while helping individuals who need it. Food insecurity is also a serious issue; over 2.8 billion people were unable to afford a healthy diet in 2022 due to high food prices. After brainstorming, we decided that giving leftover food to those who need it while simultaneously lessening food wastage was the perfect way to bring both those issues together. As a result, this will lessen CO₂ emissions because less methane is released into the atmosphere and conserve resources, promoting a greener Earth.
How we built it
Our website was built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to allow for an easy-to-use and visually pleasing experience. The main pages were focused on a clean design, eye-catching images, and directions as to how to use GrabNGo. CSS was used to assemble an inviting color palette and style the pages. JavaScript was used to make the website interactive, such as the header, a search feature that allows users to quickly find the products they're looking for, and overall create a cohesive user experience.
Challenges we ran into
Through the ups and downs of constructing GrabNGo, we ran into many hurdles that we used our teamwork and troubleshooting to get over. One of which was the inconsistencies we faced with how items added to the cart in the browsing tab were being stored and retrieved in our cart.html file. This was due to localStorage issues with different environments across the three computers we used to collaborate on. We also faced issues because we had different URLs to access our website, which affected our ability to share data. So, after adding an item to the cart, it would not show up in the cart tab. With debugging and teamwork, we were able to make this part of our project one of our strongest features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of the potential our website has. With GrabNGo, we believe we can aid in the food insecurity crisis and help the environment heal, one step at a time. We worked really hard to get the purchasing/deals aspect of our project functional, and after hours of continuous work and troubleshooting, we achieved a product we are extremely proud of and hope to take further in the future.
What we learned
Throughout the process, we learned so much about coding, time management, creating a pitch, and more. Spending 13 hours working on a single project allowed us to hone in our skills on making GrabNGo as easy-to-use and impact website. We were able to enhance our coding skills and work together as a team!
What's next for GrabNGo
We want to make this a real thing! We would like to reach out to bakeries, markets, delis, and more to make GrabNGo the real deal. Additionally, we will add features to enhance the functionality of our website, such as adding settings based on price, allergy preferences, and more. Next, we will add more features to the "Your Stats" aspect of our project with statistics based on purchases and the type of food they are purchasing. The impact of lessening food waste is endless, and with GrabNGo, we are taking the next steps in the right direction.
