Chosen Theme and Problem Statement

Our chosen theme is Environment, and our problem statement is “In 2021, the National Environment Agency lamented that Singapore’s recycling rate had fallen to a 10 year low. What can we do to encourage more people to recycle, or make recycling more convenient and accessible?”

What Does Our Hack Do

Our hack, “Grabage” helps users to locate the nearest recycling bin or centers. After creating an account in our hack, users will find a map with icons of bins near them. Upon recycling, users will be able to gain credits, which in turn they can exchange for rewards.

How Does Our Hack Answer the Problem Statement

Our hack hopes to use rewards as incentive to people so that they adopt recycling habits. The ‘Locate-Nearest-Bin’ feature will also make recycling more convenient as they do not have to go and find it themselves.

How We Built Our Hack

We built the app using Dart and Flutter, connecting to Firebase for authentication as well as storage.

What Are Some Difficulties We Overcame

Our team is made up of students with different experiences in coding, as such, we had to work together with one another, contributing with our own strengths. The time given was also quite short to develop an entire mobile app.

Our Biggest Learning Point From LifeHack 2022

For the beginners in our team, they learned a lot about the usage of Flutter and Dart in creating a cross-platform application. They also had a hands-on experience on developing application in order to solve real world problems. For the more experienced members in our team, they had a chance to learn about mentoring and how to take advantage of each member's strength.
