GPTeach.AI: Your AI-Powered Lesson Planning Co-pilot

Project Summary

For teachers, lesson planning is a disconnected nightmare of juggling PDFs, documents, and calendars. GPTeach solves this by unifying the entire workflow into a single, intelligent, and real-time planning environment.

Our standout feature is the AI co-pilot. Powered by OpenRouter, teachers can converse with an AI to generate ideas, objectives, or entire lesson plans from scratch. As the AI responds, the lesson plan document updates instantly—no copying and pasting required. This creates a fluid, conversational planning experience that feels like working with a brilliant assistant.

Beyond AI, GPTeach is a complete organizational suite. It provides a dynamic, drag-and-drop table editor, a full class and folder management system, and direct integration with Google Calendar. Lesson plans can be aligned with official curriculum standards and exported to PDF, DOCX, and JSON for universal compatibility.

Built on a modern stack including React, TypeScript, Redux Toolkit, and Firebase, GPTeach is a powerful demonstration of how AI can augment professional creativity. It streamlines administrative work, eliminates friction, and gives educators back their most valuable resource: time to focus on teaching.

About the Project

Inspiration: A Response to a Crisis

Last month, Alberta witnessed a historic, three-week teachers' strike—a cry for help from a profession that is underpaid, overworked, and burning out under the weight of administrative overload. For our team, this wasn't just a headline; it was a catalyst. We were inspired to build a tool that directly addresses this crisis. Our mission is to give teachers back their time and creative energy by building an AI co-pilot that works with them, not just for them, in real-time. We're not just building software; we're building a lifeline.

How We Built It

We architected GPTeach.AI with a modern, scalable, and fully-typed stack, ensuring a robust foundation for future growth.

  • Frontend Core: Vite, React, and TypeScript, with Redux Toolkit for meticulous, centralized state management.
  • Dynamic UI/UX: A clean, responsive interface built with Tailwind CSS. The fluid, resizable panel layout is powered by react-resizable-panels, and the intuitive drag-and-drop functionality for organizing lesson components comes from dnd-kit.
  • Rich Text Editor: The core editing experience is powered by Tiptap, providing a powerful and familiar interface for educators.
  • AI Integration: The real-time AI co-pilot is integrated with the OpenRouter API, allowing flexible access to a variety of powerful language models.
  • Backend & Authentication: We leveraged Firebase for secure Google Account sign-in (with calendar scopes) and Firestore as our persistent, cloud-synced database for all user data.

Challenges We Ran Into

This project was a 64-hour marathon defined by overcoming monumental technical challenges on a stack that was largely new to us.

  • Mastering a New Stack Under Fire: We chose TypeScript and Redux for their power, knowing we had limited experience. This meant learning and implementing advanced concepts like immutable state patterns on the fly, while the hackathon clock was ticking.

  • Building a Flawless Real-Time UI: The core promise of our app—instantaneous AI updates—depended on perfect state management. Our biggest breakthrough came when we solved why the UI wasn't re-rendering: we had to re-engineer our state updates to be explicitly immutable. This was the key that unlocked the app's instantaneous, "live" feeling.

What We Learned

This hackathon was a crucible that taught us more than just technology; it taught us about our own capacity for execution and what it truly means to be a team.

  • We Learned to "Lock In": We discovered a level of focus and synergy that proves our team can operate at an elite level, turning complex ideas into polished products at an incredible pace.

  • Immutability Isn't a Suggestion—It's the Law: We learned the hard way that for a complex, real-time UI to be reliable, you cannot cut corners on state management. Redux's strict principles are what enable the seamless user experience that now defines our product.

  • Our Team is Built for This: More than anything, we learned that we are a team that thrives under pressure. We can learn, adapt, and ship. The application you see today is a testament to our resilience and our ability to turn a powerful vision into a tangible reality. We are ready to build the future.

Our Vision & Roadmap for Growth

This hackathon project is not an endpoint; it is the launchpad for a sustainable business designed to support educators at scale. Our vision is to become the default starting point for lesson planning in every school district.

Phase 1: Refine & Grow (The Next 6 Months)

  • Goal: Achieve product-market fit and build a passionate early adopter community.
  • Actions:
    • Onboard our first 100 beta users, iterating weekly based on their feedback.
    • Enhance the AI's context-awareness, allowing it to reference past lessons to create cohesive, long-term unit plans.
    • Launch a "Community Templates" feature for educators to share their best lesson plan structures.

Phase 2: The Platform Play - School & District Pilots (Year 1)

  • Goal: Validate our B2B model and secure our first paid district contracts.
  • Actions:
    • Develop a suite of administrative features, including collaborative planning tools for teaching teams and oversight dashboards for department heads.
    • Launch a targeted pilot program with 3-5 innovative school districts in Alberta, using the recent strike as a catalyst for conversations about tooling and teacher support.
    • Leverage pilot data to build powerful case studies demonstrating measurable time savings and improved teacher satisfaction.

Phase 3: The Ecosystem Integration (Years 2-3)

  • Goal: Become an indispensable part of the core EdTech stack.
  • Actions:
    • Develop and launch official integrations for major Learning Management Systems (LMSs), including Google Classroom, Canvas, and Moodle.
    • Expand beyond a standalone tool to position GPTeach.AI as a licensed, integrated "planning engine" within these larger platforms.
    • Scale our sales and support teams to service district-level and regional contracts across North America.
